Recyclemania at Maryland 2008
January 29 through April 5, 2008

Terps recycled an average of 62,000 pounds per week over the 10-week competition! 
(An 11% increase from 2007 when only 56,191 pounds per week was recycled)
 


 

GRAND CHAMPION CATEGORY
the greatest achievement in both waste reduction and recycling
Overall winner: Kalamazoo College, MI
 In the State of Maryland, we were FIRST with a 20.52% recycling rate over UMBC’s 20.48% and Frostburg’s 13.65%

PER CAPITA CATEGORY
collecting the most recyclables per person
Overall winner: Kalamazoo College
In the State of Maryland, we are FIRST recycling 15.94 cumulative pounds per person and ahead of Towson, Mont. College, UMBC, and Frostburg; we recycled an average of 62,286 pounds per week, an 11 % increase from 2007

GORILLA PRIZE
recycling the highest gross tonnage of materials regardless of campus population.
Overall winner: Stanford University, CA
In the State of Maryland, we were FIRST at 622,860 cumulative pounds ahead of Towson, Mont. College, Frostburg, and Washington College

WASTE MINIMIZATION CATEGORY
generating the least amount of waste and recyclables, emphasizing reuse and reduction over recycling.
Overall winner: North Lake College, Irving Texas
We averaged 241,261 pounds per week by the end of the competition down 26% from the 303,440 pounds collected in the first week of the competition (less is better!)

BOTTLES & CANS CATEGORY
recycling the most bottles and cans
Overall winner: Rhode Island School of Design
In the State of Maryland, we were FIRST recycling 2.55 cumulative pounds per person and ahead of UMBC, Frostburg, and Towson and averaging 9,964 pounds per week, a 15% increase from 2007

FOOD ORGANICS CATEGORY
composting the most food waste
Overall winner: Mills College, Oakland, California
We composted an average of 11,684 pounds of food waste per week and increased the cumulative pounds per person by 23% from 2007
